چکیده

A central topic in work on ellipsis is the parallelism between missing VPs and their antecedents. There is evidence that parallelism is conditioned both syntactically and semantically. This has resulted in complex hybrid principles that regulate both syntactic structures and their interpretations (e.g., Fox 1995, 2000). We present an alternative, unified account based on parallelism of semantic derivations (i.e., proofs) in Glue Semantics (Dalrymple 1999, 2001). Our proposal captures the insights of hybrid accounts, but is conceptually simpler and empirically superior. It is also theoretically important, as it constitutes an implicit argument for a level of semantic representation, favoring indirect translation (Montague 1973) over direct model-theoretic interpretation (Montague 1970). The empirical focus of the paper is scope parallelism in ellipsis in general (Sag 1976, Williams 1977), and the problem of “Canadian flag” sentences in particular (Hirschbühler 1982). Sag (1976) noticed that a scopally ambiguous sentence seems to be disambiguated to surface scope when it is the source sentence for VP-ellipsis, as in (1).

A Study of the Role of Repetition of Music in the Nimayee Poems of Akhavan Sales

In this article, the aim of the authors is to study the role of repetition in creating music and parallelism in Nimayee poems in the three collections of poems by Mehdi Akhavan Sales: Zamestan, Akhere Shahname and Az Avesta. Accordingly, the researchers have investigated the various manners of repetition in creating parallelism in the poems at three levels: phonological parallelism, lexical par...

Well-Nested Parallelism Constraints for Ellipsis Resolution

The Constraint Language for Lambda Structures (CLLS) is an expressive tree description language. It provides a uniform framework for underspecified semantics, covering scope, ellipsis, and anaphora. Efficient algorithms exist for the sublanguage that models scope. But so far no terminating algorithm exists for sublanguages that model ellipsis. We introduce well-nested parallelism constraints an...

Ellipsis and the Structure of Discourse

It is generally assumed that ellipsis requires certain parallelism between the clause containing the ellips is and some antecedent clause. We argue that the parallelism requirement generated by ellipsis must be applied in accordance with discourse structure: a matching antecedent clause must be found that locally c-commands the clause containing the ellipsis in the discourse tree. We show that ...

A Comparative Study in Relation to the Translation of the Linguistic Humor

Mark Twain made use of repetition and parallelism as two comedic literary devices to bring comic effect to the readers. Linguistic devices of humor, repetition and parallelism seemed to create many difficulties in the translation of literary texts. The present study applied Delabatista‟s strategies for translating wordplays such as repetition and parallelism in the translation of humorous texts...

Discourse structure and parallelism in VP ellipsis

Sentences containing VP ellipsis (VPE) must find a matching antecedent VP for the elided VP. This is a condition associated with recoverability: when a VP-gap is encountered, a VP representation from the preceding context must be copied into the empty VP position for the sentence to be interpreted. What kind of representation this is has long been debated— syntactic identity [1-3] has been argu...
